• The authors take the view that the kind of learning that will define the 21st century will not take place in a classroom. It is happening all around us and it is powerful. They call it the new culture of learning. The growing digital network gives us nearly unlimited resources, while connecting us with others. Learning takes place without books, teachers, or classrooms. Classrooms and teachers may not be obsolete, but the authors make a case that they must change. They use the metaphor of cultivation to describe the process. They tell several interesting stories to make their point. They feature people: learning from each other by sharing and modifying each others’ games, hijacking the lesson plan from their professor, using Google to learn from their mistakes, playing games with family members, and participating in a community of patients with the same disease.
