Learning In The Collective

• In the new culture of learning, people learn through interaction with peers in fluid relationships, featuring shared interests. Intrinsic motivation and passion drive the process. You don’t need to own a newspaper or TV station to disseminate information. One’s contribution can be large like a website, or small, like a comment. You can belong to a variety of learning collectives that, for the most part, lack a meaningful center. Mentors may arise and give some sense of structure, but expecting them to meet structured learning objectives would fall into the traditional trap. Efforts to direct collectives would destroy what is unique and innovative about them.
