The Personal with the Collective

• Many teachers avoid group projects or use them sparingly as they have a hard time grading them. Some even try to give each student a grade based on their perceived contribution. The new social network, however, contains countless group projects. As such, the personal meets the collective in a meaningful way. Blogs represent a new form of journalism and thanks to its size, the blogosphere has much more in the way of resources than any traditional news outlet. They also represent a structural transformation of how communication happens. The new culture of learning is more like jazz, while traditional learning is like composed formal music. Expertise and authority are dispersed rather than centralized. While not every interaction creates a learning environment, each has the potential.
