How to Overcome Your Fear – Stop Reading and Start Talking
- Practice your entire speech at least three times in front of someone who has some speaking expertise. Arrive early to make sure you are familiar with the venue and your technology works. Test your microphone and run through your slides. Study the stage so you know where you can make your moves as you speak. If the chairs are movable, think about how you want them set up. Keep an outline in your pocket. You probably won’t need it, but knowing it’s there will make you confident. Memorize your introduction so you can start strong. Nervous speakers tend to speak too fast. Slow down and use pauses. Remember, your audience wants you to succeed. (Doug: Being a little nervous is fine. It will probably help you focus.)
